‘It’s a Natural Substance’: The Week in Cannabis Quotes

The first day of fall is upon us, but although the seasons are changing, Jeff Sessions’ opinion of cannabis hasn’t. He sounds off once again about his disdain for the plant, Iceland eyes legalization, Russia thinks Morgan Freeman is sick from too much cannabis, and more. Here’s a roundup of quotes from the past week.

“I’ve never felt that we should legalize marijuana. It doesn’t strike me that the country would be better if it’s being sold on every street corner. We do know that legalization results in greater use.”

– US Attorney General Jeff Sessions responding to a reporter’s question after a San Diego press conference centered on the Coast Guard seizing large quantities of heroin and cocaine

State Leaders Respond to Sessions’ Criticism of Legal Cannabis

“What’s really interesting to see, with all the legalization of marijuana happening, is how there’s evidence that it can be helpful in a medicinal sense for people. That it can really be an alternative pain management system, and, in some cases, helpful for depression. I think there is a lot of pushback against [medical marijuana], because I don’t think we can monetize it with the same kind of margin you can with an anti-anxiety pill that you get from behind the counter. But it’s incredible to see people who can’t sleep, or people who have chronic pain, report really positive results, and it’s a natural substance.”

– Gwyneth Paltrow during a conversation with Goop writer Sarah Mesle

– Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, whose son has recently denied allegations that he is a member of a Chinese gang that is smuggling methamphetamines into the country. Iceland Gets Cooler with Proposal to Legalize Cannabis

Cannabis legalization could be making its way to the beautiful country of Iceland, as a member of Parliament for Viðreisn, or The Reform Party, has proposed a bill for the legalization of adult-use cannabis.

Pawel Bartozek, a Reform Party MP, has put forth a bill in Parliament that would establish a marketplace for recreational cannabis. The bill seeks to set up rules on production and sales, and decriminalize cannabis consumption.

According to the Bartozek’s personal website, he based his legalization bill on the handbook How to Regulate Cannabis: A Practical Guide, released by the UK advocate group Transform.

If passed, Bartozek’s bill would legalize cannabis production, sales, and consumption by citizens 20 and older, while restricting cannabis packaging to plain gray containers and forbidding all cannabis advertising.

“I hope that the bill will be an icebreaker that spurs the debate and that it will ultimately lead to us ceasing the punishment of people for consuming this specific substance,” Pawel told the Iceland Review.

Leaf Forward Hopes to Be Canada’s First Cannabis-Biz Accelerator

Alex Blumenstein wasn’t sure what would come of Leaf Toronto, a monthly cannabis meet-up that he started with fellow Torontonians Brett Chang and Taylor Scollon earlier this year.

The trio of young adults started the monthly meetup because they wanted to get more involved in the industry. Between the three of them, they had years of communications and public affairs experience, and they saw a big gap in the Canadian cannabis sector.

RELATED STORY

“When you look at the tech sector, if you want to get involved there’s a meetup every day of the week,” says Blumenstein. “In the professional legal cannabis field, there is not a super-accessible way to get involved on the professional side.”

Pitch session at Leaf Forward’s July boot camp.

Their first meetup in January 2017 featured Vic Neufeld, CEO of the licensed cannabis producer Aphria, and drew a large turnout, from leaders in the industry to curious newbies. Since then, they’ve built their Leaf Toronto community with monthly fireside chats, complete with free pizza and beer.

Now, Blumenstein wants to build on Leaf Toronto’s success with Leaf Forward, a new “business accelerator” initiative that he hopes will attract Canadian cannabis businesses and provide them guidance and mentorship.

“An accelerator program takes entrepreneurs who have early-stage businesses and gives them the resources they need to take them to the next level.”

“An accelerator program takes entrepreneurs who have early-stage businesses and gives them the resources they need to take them to the next level,” Blumenstein tells me. “You may have a business with a good idea, a great team, and an idea for a product or service. We bring in experts from the cannabis industry and from outside the cannabis industry who have built and scaled companies. We have this great network of industry leaders, people who are entrepreneurial, people who want to get into the business. We bring them all together, give them the support, mentorship, applicable lessons, all that sort of thing, to grow and raise money and be a successful business.”

RELATED STORY

Chuck Rifici: The Problem-Solving Cannabis Financier

Currently Leaf Forward is in the first phase of its initiative: the boot camp.

Blumenstein launched Leaf Forward’s one-day boot camp for budding businesses in September 2017. At the premiere event, would-be weed entrepreneurs pitched the whole group, then went one-on-one with mentors in break-out sessions. “They get to have some questions answered on legal and regulatory side, have some help with their branding, fundraising, everything.”

With the ongoing boot camps supplying valuable feedback from businesses and mentors, the next step is turning Leaf Forward into a full-scale accelerator program. As it does, will Leaf Forward be putting resources into companies in exchange for equity, like CanopyBuilder and other cannabis accelerators in the United States do?

RELATED STORY

Improving the World Through Craft Cannabis: Social Entrepreneur Chris Mayerson

“That’s likely the end goal,” says Blumenstein. “But we’re probably going to go through a few phases to get there. The idea is for it to be a full-scale accelerator where there will be some sort of equity take.”

Blumenstein believes he has just the right crew of Canadian talent to mentor the new businesses. “John Prentice is just fantastic. He built the standard of software [known as Ample Organics] for the Canadian cannabis industry. Mike Lickver, part of Cannabis Wheaton, has massive industry knowledge. And Jonathon Tonge is a startup guy so he brings good tech experience.”

RELATED STORY

Why does Blumenstein think there hasn’t yet been a successful cannabis-based business accelerator in Canada?

“The real reason is that we’re early,” says Blumenstein. “We’re getting to the table early so people can start to think about what the opportunities are and we can start to guide them in the right direction—even though [with so much pending legislation] it’s not entirely clear yet what that direction will be.”

‘Hello! Thanks for Visiting Maine. May I Take Your Cannabis Order?’

In Maine, as in certain other U.S. states, adults can buy beer at a drive-through as if they were buying hamburgers at McDonalds. Now Maine is considering extending drive-through privileges to cannabis.

First reported by the Press Herald, Maine’s proposed cannabis regulations would establish a system where adults 21 and older could purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries through a drive-thru window, as well as being able to purchase cannabis over the internet.

Maine Insurer Says It Shouldn’t Have to Pay for Medical Marijuana

The proposed regulations earned praise from cannabis advocates like David Boyer, director of the Maine chapter of the Marijuana Policy Project.

“If Maine allows it for alcohol, we see no reason why it shouldn’t be allowed for marijuana, the safer substance, so long as Maine puts in place reasonable regulations to protect public safety and the consumer,” Boyer told the Press Herald’s Penelope Overton. “The voters want it regulated and taxed like alcohol. The rules should be the same.”

Maine Lawmakers Leave Key Cannabis Questions Unanswered

However, some state officials oppose the regulations, out of fear that drive-through and online sales will increase chances of cannabis ending up in the hands of minors.

“Given the fact that about half the people in the state voted against legalization, I think we ought to go slow and be cautious in the beginning,” Republican Sen. Roger Katz of Augusta told the Press Herald. (Katz adds that there is still a long way to go, and he fully supports the legislative process.)

The committee’s bill—which would also set up a 20% sales tax rate for recreational cannabis sales—will be the subject of a public hearing on Tuesday, Sep. 26, at 9 am EST, at Room 228 at the State House in Augusta. The committee will then reconvene on Sept. 27 and 28 to discuss the bill. If approved, the full Legislature will likely consider it next month.

10 Best Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshops to Visit

Early this year, news on the shuttering of Amsterdam’s oldest coffeeshop spooked smokers round the world. Many feared the fate of Mellow Yellow, established in 1972, would befall more Dutch cannabis dispensaries. Evolving national legislation has indeed forced closures, though often in connection to specific circumstances, such as proximity to a school. According to a report published in June by independent research bureau INTRAVAL, Amsterdam had 288 coffeeshops in 1999 and by 2016, only 173.

While the Netherlands was ahead of the curve in decriminalization and the fostering of an open, informative environment—coffeeshops often have signs and multilingual flyers offering tips for getting high safely—dispensaries here lag in one practice: specifying THC and CBD percentages. Rarely can dealers advise on the subject, and even the most detailed menus use emoticons, not chemical compounds, to communicate a particular strain’s effects.

These Dutch Tips on Responsible Cannabis Use Are Downright Charming

Still, if there’s one trait the Dutch capital possesses in volume, it’s dynamism. Amsterdam has always been avant-garde of social progress. In this year’s national elections, the city cast most votes for the Greens – a leftist party so named for espousing environmental priorities, though inevitably also associated with their other verdant leanings. Notable, too, is INTRAVAL’s calculation that Amsterdam still has one coffeeshop per every 4,907 residents, and that the nationwide decline feared originally “has somewhat stablised.”

So while the outlook for dispensaries in the Netherlands is not cloud-free, the landscape remains fertile and varied, as the 10 Amsterdam coffeeshops below attest to. These are our picks for the best places to stop, sip a coffee, and sample both new and classic strains the next time you’re in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: Green House(Courtesy of Green House)

Oudezijds Voorburgwal 191, 1012 EW Amsterdam

One day Green House Centrum may be considered the Studio 54 of coffeeshops. Opposite the dealers’ bar, gold-framed photos crowd the wall, proving how many celebs have been proud patrons. Rihanna and Kid Cudi may not surprise, but older-school Hollywooders, such as George Clooney and Wesley Snipes, smile down too. Frequently appearing in portraits is Green House Seed Co. owner Arjan Roskam, now globally known as a Strain Hunter in the eponymous VICE/HBO documentary series. Alongside its three Amsterdam coffeeshop branches, the company does genetics development and purveys its own exclusive seeds. It has earned oodles of accolades, winning 42 Cannabis Cup awards to date. The slender chalice trophies all glimmer in their display boxes under dimmed lighting, fitting right in with the venue’s Egyptian-palace-meets-Vegas parlor vibe.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: Tweede Kamer(Courtesy of Tweede Kamer)

Heisteeg 6, 1012 WC Amsterdam

In Dutch, Tweede Kamer means “second room,” which is apt for a place providing cannabis users with a third space. Interestingly, it is also what folks here call the Netherlands’ House of Representatives, causing some amusing mix-ups in Amsterdam-centric conversations. Forget politics though, this coffeeshop attracts everyone—Dutch hip-hop heads, introspective Euro backpackers, sweet North American retirees, et al. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in style: Art Deco lamps, portraits of old Dutch royalty, and seafoam-colored walls that up the classiness level from legal to regal. Kind and easy to talk to, the dealers double as capable baristas, serving coffee from Australian micro-roaster Lot Sixty One.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: Grey Area(Courtesy of Grey Area)

Oude Leliestraat 2, 1015 AW Amsterdam

In the heart of the Grachtengordel—Amsterdam’s canal ring, today a designated UNESCO World Heritage site—a bouncer can be found shepherding the line outside Grey Area. “You’ll get hit by a bike,” he gently warns tourists on the sidewalk. Inside, the shoebox-size coffeeshop feels part punk club, part Western Union office. Stickers paper the walls and queuing customers bifurcate the room: on one side, a small bar with a Volcano Vaporizer; on the other, a few tables and chairs. Despite the dust-covered behind-the-counter clutter, the buds are some of the freshest in town. It’s not for nothing Grey Area has won multiple Cannabis Cup and Amsterdam Unity Cup awards.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: Boerejongens(Courtesy of Boerejongens)

Baarsjesweg 239, 1058 AA Amsterdam

The olden-days apothecary aesthetic is new to Amsterdam. Most coffeeshops came on the scene between the late 70s and the early 90s, when design was heavy on synthetics and Bob Marley was still pot’s poster boy. But Boerejongens, this year celebrating a decade’s existence, counters that. Their three locations have lab-like interiors warmly offset with Art Deco furnishings, and staffed by affable white-coated dealers and doormen with the demeanor of bellhops more than bouncers. The company works with cannabis seed purveyors Amsterdam Genetics, who have helped Boerejongens gain repute for their high-quality menu, including a uniquely wide array of hash. Although the West branch prohibits smoking of anything on the premises, its hours, 7AM-10PM, fulfill the walk-in-smoke-out desire of many locals.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: La Tertulia(Courtesy of Karina Hof)

Prinsengracht 312, 1016 HX Amsterdam

While many coffeeshops have an unshakable bro-y ethos, La Tertulia is, refreshingly, run by a mother-daughter team. Now in its 35th year of operation, the place is bright, well ventilated, and plant-filled. It is situated in the picture-postcard neighborhood of the Jordaan, on the same canal as the Anne Frank House and a stroll from some of Amsterdam’s most beloved open-air markets. Accordingly, the venue attracts a more mature, artier clientele and, um, some occasional Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. There are two levels of generous seating, and bistro-like chairs and tables are set up outside, where an homage-to-Van Gogh mural serves as the backdrop.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: The Bulldog(InnaFelker/iStock)

Oudezijds Voorburgwal 90, 1012 GJ Amsterdam

Like its canine mascot, The Bulldog brand is spirited, tenacious, unmistakably present in its wide stance, and cutely butch. Established in 1975 in a former sex shop, The First was not only the business’s original location, but also one of the earliest incarnations of the modern-day Dutch dispensary. Company owner Henk de Vries claims coinage of the word “coffeeshop,” saying it came from trying to capture the “coffeehouse feeling” that his space offered residents of the surrounding Red Light District. Today the company has a whole litter of coffeeshops and gift stores, a restaurant, a pub, and a hostel, all in Amsterdam, plus a hotel in British Columbia, Canada.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: Katsu(Courtesy of Katsu)

Eerste van der Helststraat 70, 1072 NZ Amsterdam

De Pijp, once a predominantly residential neighborhood, has become an Airbnb hotbed, rife with trendy lifestyle stores and social-media-shutterbug-conscious cafés. But through all the changes, the zip code’s coolest coffeeshop, Katsu, has stayed true blue—a real winner, as its name means in Japanese. With a predilection for reggae and a kindly commanding veteran woman dealer, Katsu attracts many local clients—think Larry David-meets-Willie Nelson-esque gents, Rastas, and contemplative artists—while small groups of chill younger folks gravitate to the booth seating backlit by ode-to-Amsterdam wall art. Others come in for the changing 5-gram deals or give the De Verdamper vaporizer a whirl and a waft.

The Dolphins

Kerkstraat 39, 1017 GB Amsterdam

Five types of weed and three types of hash make for a small menu at The Dolphins, but the big draw here is the ambience: acqua-core. The coffeeshop opened 21 years ago, when interior décor evoking a Lisa Frank folder was à la mode. But the seapunk sensibility emerged in earnest from the owner’s interest in diving and longstanding eco-friendliness. The coral colonies that line the walls are made from repurposed paper and disposable cups, explains a staffer with Windex-blue lowlights in her blonde braid. Other unique attractions include a submarine parts-accented basement hospitable to tobacco smokers; six De Verdamper vaporizers; and hash muffins with rainbow nonpareils, frosted in pink and, of course, blue.

Bluebird

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: Bluebird(Courtesy of Bluebird)

Sint Antoniesbreestraat 71, 1011 HB Amsterdam

Bi-level Bluebird is a fixture on this broadway, which wraps around Waterlooplein’s famous flea market and is the site of the Rembrandt House (where the Golden Age master once lived and worked). Since its beginnings in the early 80s, Bluebird has cultivated a reputation for being welcoming and relaxed. This coming March, the coffeeshop undergoes a brief renovation to create a comfier lounge area and better bar, expecting to expand its food and drink menu beyond toasties, juices, and hot beverages. The reopening is scheduled for the start of April 2018, and the manager assures no azure avian artwork will be harmed in the process.

Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop: Kashmir(Courtesy of Kashmir)

Jan Pieter Heijestraat 82, 1053 GM Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s milieu is seesawing between its own late 20th-century kaleidoscopic diversity and the neutral-toned, less-is-more cosmopolitanism currently washing over Western cities. Nearly 20 years old, Kashmir embraces the former. While the coffeeshop is a fine, friendly place to purchase cannabis, its sister business across the street (at numbers 85–87) is an even finer spot to smoke. The Kashmir Lounge has a bar, serving spirits and thus permitting a rare confluence of consumption in the Netherlands since laws prohibit simultaneous vending of cannabis and alcohol. At night, the DJ booth brings in a mix of Afro-funk, reggae, Latin, jazz, and house. The low-to-the-ground seating, mirror-work tapestries, and Hindu deities painted on the stucco walls transport visitors elsewhere—if not to some pre-hashtag-era hash den in northern India, then at least to a conspicuously vibrant vintage Amsterdam.

New Strains Alert: CBD Rich Blessing, Raindance, Fallen Angel, and More

Leafly’s New Strains Alert is an ongoing series that announces cannabis strains recently added to our database. Leave a rating and review for any you’ve tried, or find out if a strain is available in your area, by clicking through to the strain page.

We’ve got a full house this week!

Fallen Angel from Devil’s Harvest Seeds stands as the sole indica on our list this week. Created from unlisted strains Kuchi and Shoreline, this indica-dominant beauty and her lineage has more to teach us.

CBD Rich Blessing and Pineapple Sage are derived from similar breeding stock, yet express truly opposite compositions. CBD Rich Blessing offers a nearly 2:1 THC/CBD ratio while Pineapple Sage has been documented pushing 20% THC. This experiment in dominant and recessive genetic trains would make Mendel proud while probably getting him super ripped.

I-95 and Raindance both pack loud terpene profiles with the aid of Chemdawg genetics. Raindance gets an especially hearty dose of Chemdawg genetics through its Stardawg x Chemdawg backcross crossed against Deadhead OG (which also contains Chemdawg 91).

Find more information on these strains below, and if you’ve had an opportunity to try any of these, leave a review and help inform the cannabis community.

Fallen Angel by Devil’s Harvest Seeds is a cross between a Kuchi male and Shoreline female. The two distinctive strains blend well, offering a sumptuous bouquet of skunk, fuel, lemon, and pine. This strain will reward diligent growers with dense, colorful flowers with shimmering trichomes atop purple hues. The relaxing effects of this strain saddle the limbs with a mellow, settling sensation that gets heavier with continued consumption. Enjoy Fallen Angel later in the day to maximize this strain’s creeping sedation.

Lemon Créme is a unique and unstable sativa-dominant strain created by Love Genetics. It was brought into existence by crossing Lemon Jack with DNA Genetics’ Sour Cream (a Sour Diesel heirloom x G15 Haze). The breeder notes that this strain is prone to produce three distinct phenotypes with varied aromas, such as Earl Grey tea, lemon Pinesol, and American sweet tea. Lemon Créme is a rare cut due to its instability, but has gone on to influence other Love Genetics’ crosses like Prometheus. This strain has an approximate flowering time of 69 to 77 days.

I-95 is deep hybrid cut bred from Triangle Kush and a Legend OG x Stardawg IX2 hybrid by Money Mike of Top Dawg Genetics. This strain is known to produce dense, light green buds covered in glistening trichomes, and it offers balanced physical and mental effects. I-95’s terpene profile is a pungent bouquet of diesel fuel and sour funk that fills the room and excites the palate. This strain is grown by Canna Organix in Washington state.

This balanced strain offers consumers a positive, uplifting buzz that turns down the volume on depression and anxiety. LS Night Nurse also offers a fruity terpene profile that is tart and jammy, satisfying the fussiest palates.

Raindance by Greenpoint Seeds is a vigorous cannabis variety with quick vegetative growth and a generous yield. A cross of Deadhead OG x (Chemdawg 4 x Chemdawg BX), this strain is a quick and vigorous take on the OG and Chemdog genetic lines, with strong emphasis on chemical aromas. Consumers should also detect a pungent, skunky aroma dominated by tart lemons, pine needles, and diesel fumes. Raindance is primarily indica-dominant, but also offers pleasant cerebral effects. It can be utilized for midday pain, anxiety, depression, and general decompression after a long day. This is a must for OG and Chem lovers!

Pineapple Sage by Love Genetics is a backcross of CBD Rich Blessing with a unique expression of recessive genetics. It boasts a strong THC-dominant cannabinoid profile despite being created from relatively balanced 2:1 THC/CBD strains. This unique expression of the CBD Rich Blessing yields a tropical and herbal terpene profile of citrus and sage with effects that are centered and sativa-forward. Pineapple Sage is motivating and optimistic without being overstimulating, making it a helpful companion for active cannabis consumers.

CBD Rich Blessing by Bodhi Seeds is a 2:1 THC/CBD strain steeped in medicinal cannabis genetics. Created by crossing the famous ACDC strain and the father of the Good Medicine Project (Harlequin x Appalachia), this strain is a mixed THC/CBD strain that masterfully balances potency and functionality. CBD Rich Blessing has been known to pop both THC-rich and CBD-dominant phenotypes that emit a pleasant fragrance of woody and floral terpenes. Utilize this strain to improve mood and contend with inflammation.

SEATTLE, WA — The legal cannabis industry is responsible for the creation of an estimated 150,000 full-time jobs, according to state-by-state data compiled by the online content provider Leafly.com.

Their analysis identified 149,304 full-time jobs supported by the legal marijuana industry. Not all of the jobs included in the tally involved direct contact with the plant, as ancillary businesses like consultants and hydroponics providers were also included.

The total represents a 22 percent increase in the number of full-time cannabis-related jobs created within the past 12 months.

States reporting the largest number of cannabis-related jobs were California (47,711) Colorado (26,891), and Washington (26,556).

Medical Students Aren’t Being Taught About Medical Marijuana

ST LOUIS, MO — Medical students are rarely provided with educational information specific to the medicinal use of cannabis and are ill equipped to discuss the issue with their patients, according to survey data published in the journal Drugs and Alcohol Dependence.

Investigators from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis surveyed medical school deans and residents and evaluated curriculum databases to assess the degree of education physicians-in-training receive on the topic of medical marijuana.

Authors reported: “Over 75 percent of medical school curriculum deans reported that their graduates are not at all prepared or are only slightly prepared to answer patients’ questions about medical marijuana, and 94 percent reported that their graduates are not at all prepared or only slightly prepared to prescribe medical marijuana.”

In addition, fewer than ten percent of medical schools have medical marijuana documented in their curriculum.

A 2015 study similarly reported that 90 percent of pharmacy students believe that greater emphasis on medical cannabis ought to be included in their curriculum.

Authors concluded: “[O]ur study highlights a fundamental and potentially growing mismatch between the legalization of medical marijuana at a state level and the ability of physicians to properly address patients’ questions about medical marijuana or to appropriately prescribe it. … With more states on the cusp of legalizing medical marijuana, we must address this mismatch between policy and physician training so that we can best help our patients obtain the potential benefits and minimize adverse consequences from using medical marijuana.”

Full text of the study, “Physicians-in-training are not prepared to prescribe medical marijuana,” appears in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
