The Miami Dolphins have released defensive tackle Leon Orr following his arrest for marijuana possession in Florida.
Orr was arrested Tuesday on marijuana charges by the Collier County Sheriff’s Department, and faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana (not more than 20 grams) and a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.
The 24 year old, playing in his second season in the NFL, was stopped by deputies on Tuesday on Interstate 75 because his black BMW appeared to have illegally tinted windows, according to the arrest report.
Deputies said they “could immediately smell the odor of the marijuana coming from inside the vehicle” upon approaching the car. Deputies asked Orr to step out of his car, patted him down, and found marijuana “stuffed down his pants.”
Orr was booked into the Naples Jail Center, where he was later released after posting a $7,000 bond.
The Dolphins reportedly learned of the arrest during Wednesday’s practice, pulled Orr off the field, and released him.
“We’re in the middle of the season,” Dolphins coach Adam Gase told the Miami Herald. “We have priorities and this is the No. 1 priority. Guys who have other priorities, they can go about their business somewhere else.”
According to a press release issued by the team, Orr played in five games this season and registered one solo tackle. He was signed to the Dolphins’ practice squad on Sept. 20, 2016 and promoted to the active roster on Oct. 12, 2016.
Orr spent the 2015 season with the Oakland Raiders organization, where he spent the majority of the season on the practice squad but played in three games and made two tackles (one solo).
Orr is in his second season with the NFL, originally entering the league as an undrafted college free agent with the Raiders on May 8, 2015.
The Dolphins are currently 7-4 and in second place of the AFC East, trailing the New England Patriots.
