The G Pen Pro Reviewed: A Quality Herbal Vaporizer Under $100

The innovators at Grenco Science, makers of the popular G Pen series of portable wax and herb vaporizers, have just released their newest portable personal vaporizer, and it is designed fur use with dry herbs.  (If you’re looking for something to use with wax and concentrates, check out the original G Pen.)

The G Pen Pro, is a completely redesigned replacement for Grenco’s G Pro, and sells for the same $99.95 price point as the now-discontinued predecessor, first released in 2014.

The G Pen Pro from Grenco Science comes packaged in a sleek kit with all the necessary accessories, making it a great gift under $100.

Packaged in a sleek, cylindrical container, the G Pen Pro would make a great gift for your favorite stoner (or for yourself).  In addition to the vaporizer, the package contains a grinder card, charging cable, cleaning brush, and a custom designed tool to aid in packing and cleaning the vape.

The G Pen Pro is smaller than typical vape pens designed for dry herbs, such as the G Pen Elite, Grenco’s $150 dry herb vape, which is significantly wider.  The smaller, compact size of the G Pen Pro makes it perfect for the on-the-go toker, and easily fits in your pocket, backpack or purse.

Before you can use it for the first time, you’ll need to charge your G Pen Pro, which can take up to 2-3 hours for a full charge.  The four led lights on the vaporizer will blink to show that it’s charging, and charging is complete when all the lights are lit solid.  A fully charged battery is good for at least 12 uses (48 minutes of power), according to the specifications.

Once charged and ready for use, it’s easy to remove the mouthpiece, just push up on the back of it and it pops off. While the mouthpiece is easy to pop off intentionally, it seems designed to prevent it from accidentally coming off in your pocket or purse. I carried the G Pen Pro in my pocket and went for a hike without any problems.

The chamber is designed to hold about .25 grams of ground herb, so be careful not to over pack it.  Keep in mind that a quarter-gram is good for personal use, but not really enough for sharing, and you’ll probably want to bring along some more bud if you plan on being out for a while.

Once packed and ready to go, simply press the button five times to turn this little guy on.  The G Pen Pro comes with three pre-set temperatures, which are selected by pressing and holding the button.  The lights on the vape will change colors depending upon your desired temperature – blue (375°), green (400°) or red (428°). If you’re looking for an herbal vape that features more precise temperature selection, check out the the G Pen Elite, which allows you to select any temperature you want.

Try to start off at a lower temperature, because at higher temperatures you’re still likely to get that “burnt popcorn” taste that comes when you over heat your vapes. Unfortunately, I’ve found this to be true with any portable herbal vape.

The G Pen Pro takes about 20 to 30 seconds to come up to the desired temperature, at which point the lights will remain solid.  Once the lights stay lit, you’re good to go.

The G Pen Pro delivers smooth hits, just make sure you take long, slow draws for best results.  And don’t over pack it, because the air needs to flow around your bud.

The G Pen Pro will turn off automatically after four minutes.  Once you’re done, use the included cleaning brush and tool to remove any leftover bud and to clean the mouthpiece and chamber.  For best results, you’ll want to do this in between each time you use your G Pen Pro.

Overall, the G Pen Pro left me pleasantly surprised.  For a portable, ground herb vaporizer that costs under $100, the aluminium body feels solid in my hands, and like all Grenco Science products comes with a one-year warranty.  The G Pen Pro seriously outperforms other dry herb vaporizers I’ve tried, all of which cost at least twice the price and are more than double the size.  I can see this little guy coming along on many hikes for discrete toking.

The only downside I’ve found with the G Pen Pro is that the mouthpiece can get hot if you’re using it a lot continuously, but that’s true with pretty much every portable herbal vape I’ve found. The simple solution is to use this as a personal vaporizer, don’t pass it around in a session.

The G Pen Pro herbal vaporizer can be purchased direct from Grenco Science for $99.95 with free domestic shipping, and may be available at your local head shop — click here to find a local retailer near you.
